The Reichert family
The Albert P. and Walton B. Reichert Scholarship was established in 2015 by brothers Albert P. Reichert, Jr., 61C, Stephen A. Reichert, 65C, and Robert A. B. Reichert, University of Georgia, 1978, in memory of their parents, Albert P. and Walton B. Reichert.
Albert P. Reichert graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, Georgia, in 1932, in the depths of the depression, when many people could not afford to go to college. Albert’s father was deceased. Albert’s pastor, Dr. Edmund F. Cook, at the Vineville Methodist Church in Macon, encouraged Albert to apply at Emory, saying that he had a scholarship for him. Dr. Cook carried Albert to Emory and paid his first quarter tuition. That got him started. He worked his way through Emory doing many jobs, including working at the reception desk at Emory Hospital on the night shift. Albert later was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated from Emory in 1936. He is a member of the Emory Sports Hall of Fame. In December, 1936, he married Elizabeth Walton Bowen, his high school sweetheart, who was then a student at Duke University and President of the Women’s College Student Government. She graduated from Duke University in 1937, at the same time Albert received his Master’s Degree from Duke. Albert had a strong love for Emory and was grateful to Emory for the education that he received there, and the strong personal ties that he made with many of the students and faculty.
Albert and Walton were married for 75 years. Albert died February 16,2012, and Walton died six days later on February 22,2012. This scholarship is established to help make an Emory education available for others.
