The Allen family
Nan Allen Nixon established the John Q., Kate S. and Stanley Allen Scholarship in memory of her parents John Quinton Allen and Kate Shadburn Allen and her brother Stanley Allen. The Allen family settled in Buford and opened a tannery which quickly grew into a huge industry — harness factory, saddle factory, glue factory and shoe factory – with a payroll of over $1 million. Ms. Nan Allen Nixon’s grandfather was regarded as the first citizen and most successful businessman in Gwinnett County until his death in 1925. Members of the Allen family continue to be strong supporters of Emory College to this day.
