Paul McLarty

Paul McLarty, an esteemed Emory alumnus, stands as a shining example of dedication and service to both Emory University and the field of law. His unwavering commitment has earned him the highest honor bestowed upon an Emory graduate—the Emory Medal, which he received on October 29, 2015. This distinguished accolade serves as a testament to a lifetime of exceptional contributions.

McLarty’s impact on the Emory community is immeasurable, and his leadership has left an indelible mark. As a retired senior partner of McLarty, Robinson & Van Voorhies, he demonstrated exemplary expertise in the legal realm. However, his impact extended far beyond his professional achievements.

McLarty’s own educational journey at Emory, where he graduated from both Emory College in 1963 and Emory Law School in 1966, has been a driving force behind his unwavering commitment to his alma mater. His personal experiences have instilled in him a deep appreciation for the transformative power of education and the need to provide opportunities for students to thrive.

Recognizing the financial challenges faced by many students, McLarty and his wife, Ruth McLarty, made a significant planned gift to Emory College and Emory Law School. With a focus on need-based scholarships, their aim was to alleviate the financial burden on deserving students and empower them to pursue their academic dreams. The McLartys firmly believe that financial aid plays a pivotal role in creating opportunities for students to thrive.

McLarty’s dedication to the cause of student support was shaped by personal experiences and interactions. His involvement with Emory interns at his law office, interactions with the Emory student alumni association, and a deep understanding of the financial stress and debt that students often face fueled his commitment to making higher education accessible and affordable. He witnessed talented students opt for more affordable alternatives despite being accepted into Emory Law, which reinforced his resolve to ensure that deserving students can pursue their education without undue financial constraints.

Beyond his financial contributions, McLarty has actively engaged with the Emory community, serving as a past president of the Emory Alumni Board. He understands the importance of fostering strong alumni relationships and building a vibrant community that supports current students and fellow graduates alike. McLarty firmly believes that a robust network of alumni enhances the Emory experience and provides invaluable support to students as they navigate their academic and professional journeys.
