Judson Graves
Judson Graves is a distinguished veteran trial lawyer, nationally recognized for his exceptional skills in civil jury trial work, particularly in complex cases within state and federal courts. With a focus on products liability, medical malpractice, defamation, and intellectual property, Graves’ 37-year career at Alston & Bird established him as a preeminent figure in the legal profession.
A 1975 graduate of Emory University School of Law, Graves’ profound ties to Emory Law extend far beyond his illustrious career. As an adjunct faculty member at the law school, he shared his vast knowledge and experience in the legal arena with future lawyers, teaching the Advanced Civil Trial Practice and actively participating in the esteemed Kessler-Eidson Program for Trial Techniques.
Throughout his tenure at Alston & Bird, Graves held numerous leadership roles, including serving as the co-chair of the firm’s Adversarial Practice Groups, practice group leader, and chair of the Pro Bono Committee. His unwavering dedication to mentoring and developing junior and senior associates cemented his reputation as a respected counselor and teacher of lawyers.
Graves’ accomplishments as a trial lawyer are numerous, and his prowess has been recognized by industry peers and publications alike. He earned accolades such as being profiled in The National Law Journal’s feature “Winning” as one of the top 10 trial lawyers in the United States. Best Lawyers honored him as one of the “Lawyers of the Year” in Georgia, underscoring his outstanding legal acumen and contributions to the legal community.
Beyond his legal achievements, Graves also served as a lieutenant and weapons officer on the USS McCaffery during his service in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1972.
Upon his retirement, Graves’ friends and colleagues rallied to honor his legacy and dedication to the legal profession by establishing the Judson Graves Prize for Excellence in Trial Practice Endowment in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes and supports outstanding students pursuing trial practice, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of trial lawyers.
In 2017, Emory University School of Law chose Judson Graves as itsinterim dean, a testament to his enduring connection to theinstitution and his reputation as an enthusiastic advocate andleader. While his role as interim dean has concluded, Judson’scontributions to Emory Law and the legal community continue toinspire and shape the future of legal education and trial practice.
