John L. Taylor, Jr.
John L. Taylor Jr. left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire. Born on March 8, 1947, at Emory Hospital, Taylor was destined for greatness. His parents, John Sr., a property developer, and Marjorie Cravey, from a prominent political family with interests in banking and law, laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
Taylor’s educational journey took him through Emory at Oxford, Emory University, and finally Emory Law, where he honed his legal acumen. As an officer in the Student Government Association, Taylor made a lasting impact on Emory University’s vibrant community. He was also a distinguished member of Omicron Delta Kappa and participated in the prestigious Barkley Forum.
In law school, Taylor’s brilliance shone through as the articles editor of the law review and a key member of the Moot Court team, earning accolades and recognition. After graduating in 1971, Taylor married Susan, his adoring wife, and embarked on an exceptional journey in both law and life.
As a Captain in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Marine Corps, Taylor served his country honorably. Following his military service, he joined the law firm Troutman & Sanders before establishing his own law firm, Taylor, Feil, Harper, Lumsden & Hess, P.C. The firm thrived under his leadership, becoming a force to be reckoned with in multi-national and domestic litigation, representing entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies.
Beyond his successful legal career, Taylor was an avid sportsman with diverse interests. He indulged in sailing, scuba diving, cycling, waterskiing, hunting, and fishing across the globe. His passion for adventure extended to travel, instilling a love for exploration in his daughters.
John L. Taylor Jr.’s impact reaches far beyond his passing on April 22, 2018. His memory lives on through this endowed scholarship established in his name at Emory University School of Law, supporting marines and students with military backgrounds. His spirit of adventure, dedication, and love for life remain an inspiration to all who knew him.
