J. Ben Shapiro
J. Ben Shapiro, Jr. is a dedicated community leader, accomplished attorney, and esteemed Emory University alumnus. He graduated from Emory College in 1964, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and academic prowess. As president of the College Council, representative to the Student Senate, and captain of the track team, Shapiro showcased his commitment to excellence in various aspects of campus life. He was also a member of the prestigious Omicron Delta Kappa and DVS honor societies.
Continuing his educational journey at Emory Law School, Shapiro excelled academically and made significant contributions to the legal community. He received the Outstanding Freshman Award and served as associate editor of the Journal of Public Law. His passion for law and dedication to the legal profession were evident during his tenure as chairman of the Law Day Committee.
After graduating from Emory Law School in 1967, Shapiro embarked on a successful career as a construction contract attorney. As a partner in he esteemed Atlanta law firm of Shapiro, Fussell, Wedge, Smotherman & Martin, he has established himself as a respected legal practitioner. Shapiro is a member of the Public Contract Law Section of the American Bar Association and actively participates in the ABA’s Forum on the Construction Industry. He also serves as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Shapiro has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service. He has held various leadership roles, including serving as president of the Georgia Indigent Legal Services, Inc. He has been a board member for the Task Force for the Homeless, actively working to address pressing social issues. Shapiro’s involvement extends to organizations such as the Atlanta Jewish Federation, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta, where he served as secretary during the 1993-94 term.
Shapiro’s dedication to Emory University is exemplary. He has been an active volunteer and leader within the Emory alumni community. He served as the chairman of the Law School Campaign in 1993-94, and his contributions as past president of the Law School Alumni Association and past chairman of the Law School Fund have been invaluable. Shapiro’s commitment to his alma mater also led him to establish the Class of 1967 Law Scholarship at Emory Law School in 1992, providing support and opportunities for future generations of law students. Recognizing his exceptional contributions and leadership, Shapiro was elected as a member of the University Board of Trustees in 1990. His expertise, dedication, and commitment to community service have made a lasting impact on Emory University and the broader Atlanta community.
