The Irwin Liu Endowed Scholarship, established with generous gifts from Mr. William G. Gisel and the Emory Law Class of 1978, honors the memory of Irwin K. Liu, a highly accomplished individual who left a lasting impact in both his personal and professional life.

Born in 1953, education played a vital role in Liu’s journey to success. He earned his B.A. from Boston University before pursuing a J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1979. This solid educational foundation equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in his chosen field.

Admitted to the bar in 1980, Liu embarked on a remarkable legal career. He established himself as a reputable lawyer, earning recognition from Martindale-Hubbell. His expertise and dedication to his clients led to numerous achievements in commercial, securities, and antitrust litigation. Notably, Liu became partner and principal of Summit Associates and Liu & Choy PLLC.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Liu was deeply committed to fostering meaningful connections and serving his community. He valued lifelong friendships and cherished the bond he shared with childhood friend and others. Liu’s love for foreign cars and motorcycles provided an avenue for shared adventures and mutual passions. Additionally, he demonstrated exceptional resilience and strength during his battle with cancer, becoming an inspiration and role model for others facing similar challenges.

Throughout his life, Liu exemplified the values of integrity, perseverance, and compassion. His professional accomplishments, coupled with his commitment to community and nurturing lifelong relationships, cemented his legacy as a respected attorney and beloved friend. Irwin K. Liu’s contributions continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and the legal community in which he thrived. He passed away in 2008.
