Hugh Frederick MacMillan was a distinguished figure hailing from Atlanta, GA, whose life was marked by academic excellence and remarkable contributions to the legal and corporate spheres. He was initiated into the esteemed Beta Chapter of Mu Beta Psi at Davidson College, where he showcased his musical talents as an active member of the Glee Club. Graduating from Davidson in 1931 with a degree in Political Science, he went on to pursue a legal career at Emory University School of Law, earning his degree in 1934 amid the challenging backdrop of the Great Depression.

In 1937, Hugh MacMillan embarked on a extraordinary journey, joining the legal department of The Coca-Cola Company. His dedication and expertise saw him rising through the ranks, eventually serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Post-war, he took on the role of Vice-President at Coca-Cola Export Corporation, where he played a pivotal role in introducing bottling operations in Japan, India, and other Asian countries. In 1972, he returned to his roots in Atlanta.

Beyond his successful corporate endeavors, Hugh MacMillan’s philanthropic spirit shone brightly. A significant milestone in his legacy was the transformative $2.3 million gift he generously bestowed upon the Emory University Law School. This magnanimous contribution catalyzed a monumental $12 million construction and renovation project that substantially expanded the law school’s library space.
