Friends of Ben F. Johnson III
Trustees, alumni, and friends of Emory University established the Ben F. Johnson III Scholarship in 2013, to mark Ben F. Johnson III’s retirement from an 18 year tenure (13 of which he served as Board Chair) on the Emory Board of Trustees. This endowed scholarship honors Ben’s intellectual curiosity, commitment to scholarship, and his deep roots at Emory – his father, Ben F. Johnson Jr. was Dean of Emory Law from 1961 to 1973 and Johnson himself is a 1965 graduate of Emory College. While at Emory, Johnson plunged fully into the Emory experience, from participating on The Barkley Forum and Interfraternity Council to the Honor Council and an assortment of honor societies. At graduation, Johnson received the Marion Luther Brittain Service Award, the University’s highest student honor in recognition of service and leadership. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Johnson returned to Atlanta, joining Alston & Bird in 1971 as a commercial litigator. He also grew interested in Emory alumni activities and other, wider civic concerns, serving as board chair for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, The Woodward Academy and the Metro Atlanta YMCA as well as work with The Carter Center, Woodruff Arts Center, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and Atlanta’s Midtown Alliance.
