Charles E. Watkins

According to former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn: "Charlie Watkins was the kind of lawyer – and the kind of friend – who stood for integrity, intelligence, and dedication to his profession.” With a legacy that continues to inspire, Charles E. Watkins left an indelible mark on the legal community and beyond.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Charles Watkins graduated from Duke University in 1952 before then embarking on a distinguished military career, serving as a Naval officer during the Korean War. In1957, Watkins relocated to Atlanta, where he worked for the Celanese Corporation before pursuing his passion for the law.

Watkins enrolled at Emory University School of Law, where his exceptional academic abilities and leadership qualities quickly became evident. As a student, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Emory Journal of Public Law, leaving a lasting impact on the institution.

After graduating with his law degree in 1962, Watkins joined the Atlanta law firm Hansell & Post. Over the years, he honed his skills as a senior litigator and managing partner, specializing in bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, product liability, and environmental law. Watkins’ unwavering dedication to his profession earned him recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Beyond his legal practice, Watkins was deeply committed to his community and profession. He held numerous leadership positions with both the State and Atlanta Bar Associations, making notable contributions to the field through his involvement in the Atlanta Bar’s influential Judicial Selection and Tenure Committee.

Watkins was a loving husband to Isabelle and a devoted father to their four children—Elise, Charles E. III, James, and Henry. Family was always at the center of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with loved ones. Tragically, he passed away at the age of fifty-five in September 1985 after battling cancer, leaving behind a profound legacy of professionalism, compassion, and excellence.

In honor of his remarkable contributions, the Emory University School of Law established the Charles E. Watkins, Jr., Scholarship in 1986. Through this enduring scholarship, Watkins’ legacy continues to inspire and shape the next generation of legal professionals.
